Sherman Alexie, a Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian, was
born on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Wellpinit,
Washington in 1966. He is a prolific writer of novels,
short stories, poems and screenplays. The movie Smoke
Signals, which was based on his short story “This
is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona” and
for which he wrote the screenplay, won awards at the
Sundance Film Festival in 1998. His collections of short
stories have also won the Before Columbus Foundation's
American Book Award and the Hemingway Foundation/PEN
Award. His latest collection of poetry is titled Ten
Little Indians, released in 2003.
The Indiana Review published three poems of
Mr. Alexie’s in Volume 18.2: “Faith,”
“How to Write the Great American Indiana Novel,”
and “Capital Punishment.” One of Mr. Alexie’s
poems was also published in Volume
25.1, “A Short History of Arm-Horses.”
