Submission
Guidelines
Due to a backlog, fiction submissions will close February 22, 2010. Poetry and nonfiction submissions will remain open.
Indiana
Review is published semiannually in May and November.
Our reporting time is usually 2 - 4 months, but may,
at times, be longer. IR accepts less than 1%
of manuscripts submitted. Payment for publication is
$5.00 per page ($10.00 minimum), two contributor's copies,
and the remainder of a year's subscription. Rights revert
to author upon publication.
Needs:
IR publishes 6-10 stories, 40-60 pages of poetry,
1-2 nonfiction pieces, and 6-12 book reviews per issue,
as well as art inserts when funding allows. All work
must be previously unpublished. We look for poems, stories,
and nonfiction that are well-crafted and lively, have
an intelligent sense of form and language, assume a
degree of risk, and have consequence beyond the world
of their speakers or narrators. We also welcome interviews
with established writers.
- Stories:
Send only one story per submission, up to 40 double-spaced
pages. Translations are welcome.
- Poems:
Send only 3-6 poems per submission. Do not send more
than 4 poems if longer than 3 pages each. Do not fold
poems individually or staple poems together. Translations
are welcome.
- Nonfiction:
Send only one essay per submission, up to 30 double-spaced
pages.
- Book
Reviews: Most book reviews are written by IR
staff, but we are open to freelance reviews of 500
to 800 words on books published in the last two years.
Please note that response time for book reviews may
be greater.
- Graphic
Arts: Paintings, photographs, comics, and
drawings are welcome. In lieu of originals, please
send slides or digital images of work. DO NOT send the
only copy of work. Send up to five pieces that are
up to 6 x 9" in dimensions or may be later reduced
to this size. Visual works must also be publishable
in black and white, but, when funding allows, may
be published in full color.
How to submit: There is no need to
query editors about submitting work. Submission status
may be queried by mail or email, but please allow four
months before querying.
- All
submissions and correspondence MUST include a self-addressed
stamped envelope. We cannot respond to submissions
otherwise. Include additional postage if work is to
be returned. If submitting the work from outside the US, include an e-mail address for reply; replies will not be sent by post internationally.
- Send
only one submission per genre and wait for a response
before sending another. Additional submissions per
genre will be returned unread.
- Each
submission must be submitted under separate cover,
including a SASE for each submission. That is to say,
if you would like to send both a poetry and fiction
submission, they each must arrive in their own envelopes.
- Simultaneous
submissions are okay, but we must be promptly notified
of acceptance elsewhere.
- Clearly
mark envelope to the appropriate genre editor's attention
(e.g. "Fiction Editor").
- Include
cover letter listing work titles, previous publications
and awards, and a SHORT bio. For receipt confirmation,
please include email address. Explanations of manuscript
meaning, theme, or technique are not necessary.
- No
handwritten, faxed, emailed, or poorly copied/printed
manuscripts will be considered.
- IR
cannot consider work (other than book reviews) from
anyone currently or recently affiliated with Indiana
University, which includes those who have studied
at or worked for Indiana University within the past
4 years.
- Our
policy on electronic publication is this: works posted
to personal blogs may be considered for publication,
but work published in any e-zine is a previous publication,
as is any part of a thesis or dissertation that has
been published electronically.
- Sample
Issues: Sample copies of IR are
available for $9. Add $6 per issue for postage outside
of the United States ($3.50 for Canada). Click
