Black Friday Indiana Review/Black Warrior Review/Hayden’s Ferry Review Submission Period!

The editors of Indiana Review, Black Warrior Review, and Hayden’s Ferry Review are excited to read submissions of short fiction, poetry, and nonfiction fee-free for one day only! We hope this period is a nod to that fact that though we must charge submission fees, we don’t like to. All submissions will be considered for publication by all three journals. Pieces may be accepted by only one of the three: BWR, HFR, or IR.

You send us your best work. We duke it out for a chance to publish our favorites.

Submissions for this joint period will be accepted through BWR’s online submission manager at bwr.submittable.com/submit. No mailed submissions will be considered. Be sure to select the “No-Fee Black Friday Submission!” category for proper consideration. No submission fees will be charged for this special one-day only Black Friday submission period. Read more…

Announcing Indiana Review/IU Press Blue Light Book Prize!

We at Indiana Review are thrilled to announce Blue Light Books, a new book series partnership with the excellent Indiana University Press. The Blue Light Book Prize will rotate each year between short story and poetry collections. The inaugural Prize, awarded in 2016, will be for a short story collection. The first awarded Prize aims to display a stunning collection of fiction and will be published through IU Press. The winner will be awarded $2,000, publication, be flown out to read at our 2017 Blue Light Reading here in beautiful Bloomington, IN, and will be selected through an anonymous reading by Michael Martone.

The name for the collaboration was inspired by a blue light outside of the Indiana Review offices, which are located at the end of a long hallway. When the office is open, the blue light is turned on. Our annual spring Blue Light Reading has come to symbolize our sense of openness and larger dedication to the literary community, and we are proud to expand this commitment with our Blue Light Books Prize. Indiana Review will be accepting submissions of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction for our Ghost issue starting on September 1, 2015. We are seeking work that addresses this theme and welcome all creative interpretations. In considering the Ghost theme, we wonder: How can we excavate disappearance and evaporation, loss in all its forms? How can what is left materialize before us or vanish noiselessly into the dark? This issue will be full of cool fog and soft light—the living glow inside the body. Read more…

Announcing Indiana Review Online: an Undergraduate Project!

Many members of our Indiana Review staff are fortunate enough to teach Introduction to Creative Writing as well as Poetry and Fiction writing courses here at Indiana University. We are even luckier to have a talented student body eagerly interested in both editing and submitting their own writing, and as instructors, we love to help get them involved to this end.

Indiana Review and Indiana University’s W280 Literary Editing and Publishing course have decided to team up and create a space for any currently enrolled undergraduate student to submit POETRY or SHORT FICTION (up to 5000 words) to us for consideration in our once-annual issue of Indiana Review Online: an Undergraduate Project. This inaugural issue will be published on Indiana Review’s website in January 2016 and will be wholly edited by undergraduate IU students enrolled in the course. Please see a complete list of submission guidelines below. Read more…
