Submissions to the 2017 Blue Light Books Prize for a full-length poetry collection is now OPEN until February 15, 2017!

Winner receives $2,000, a publication contract with Indiana University Press, and be flown out to read a selection of their work at the annual 2018 Blue Light Reading in beautiful Bloomington, IN.

The reading fee for one entry is $20 and includes a year subscription to the journal.

The 2017 Blue Light Books Prize is now open until February 15th.

Final Judge: Ross Gay

Ross Gay is the author of three books: Against Which; Bringing the Shovel Down; and Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude, winner of the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award and the 2016 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award. Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude is currently a nominee for the Hurston-Wright Legacy Award. Catalog was also a finalist for the 2015 National Book Award in Poetry, the Ohioana Book Award, the Balcones Poetry Prize, and it was nominated for an NAACP Image Award.


Reading Fee: $20 USD—Includes a subscription to Indiana Review

The winner of our contest will receive $2,000 and a publication contract with Indiana University Press.

All entries are considered anonymously.

Previously published works and works forthcoming elsewhere cannot be considered.

Simultaneous submissions are okay, but the entry fee is non-refundable if the submitted work is accepted elsewhere.

Multiple entries are okay, as long as a separate reading fee is included with each entry.

Further, IR cannot consider work from anyone currently or recently affiliated with Indiana University or the prize judge.

  • Send only one short story of up to 8,000 words.
  • As of September 2014 we no longer accept hard-copy submissions.
  • Entrant’s name must not appear on the submission.
  • Cover letter must include name, address, phone number, and title. Entrant’s name should appear ONLY in the cover letter.
  • Each fee entitles entrant to a subscription of the journal. International addresses, please add $12 for postage ($7 for addresses in Canada).
  • Be sure to select the genre “2016 Fiction Prize” on the submission form.
  • The Prize deadline is October 31, 2016 at midnight EST.
  • Entries submitted before the opening date or after the deadline will not be considered.
  • You will be redirected to the Submissions Manager to complete your entry after completing the PayPal payment. If you are not automatically redirected, please follow the link "Indiana Review Submissions" to arrive at the Submissions Manager.
